I Don’t Know Where Magic Is

I don't know where the Magic Is By Margaret Kingsbury

I don’t know where magic is

or what it does.

Do green shoots sprout organically

or does the green lady cast a growing spell?

Do trolls know instinctively which questions to ask

or does a magic stone gift the knowledge?

Do fairies exist because of magic

or does magic exist because of fairies?

I don’t know the answers, where magic is

or if it exists,

but the dew that clings to my running, laughing daughter

as she chases some poor robin friend

and the creek sweeping along its destined path

through our backyard

might know something of magic,

of its existence, perhaps, and its power.
